What is coprophagy?

Coprophagy refers to the behavior of animals eating their own feces. In the context of cavies (guinea pigs), this behavior is vital for their health and nutrition. Cavies produce two types of droppings: hard pellets and softer droppings known as cecotropes, which are nutrient-rich and re-ingested to maximize nutrient absorption.

This process allows them to extract essential vitamins, minerals, and beneficial bacteria that may not have been completely digested during the first passage through the digestive system. By eating cecotropes, cavies ensure they maintain a balanced diet and support their gut health.

The other options present concepts that do not accurately describe coprophagy. Eating cavy food pertains to their diet but does not involve the unique behavior of re-ingesting their droppings.
