What should you observe for in a healthy cavy?

A healthy cavy should have normal fecal output because this directly indicates its digestive health and overall well-being. In guinea pigs, consistent and appropriate fecal production suggests that they are eating well and that their digestive system is functioning properly. Abnormal fecal output, such as diarrhea or a lack of feces, can signal health issues that need immediate attention.

Frequent loud noises, which could indicate distress or discomfort, are not a sign of health. Excessive sleeping can imply a range of health problems; while cavies do need rest, excessive lethargy is often a cause for concern. An active respiratory rate might indicate stress or excitement rather than being a reliable indicator of health; a calm, steady breathing rate is typically what one would want to observe in a healthy cavy.
